Here’s what no one can teach—except time, I guess. Time can teach you this: The greatest asset you can have is a steely patience, an ever-present calm, as the money disappears; the studio caves; the star bails; the writer goes into hiding; the stock market collapses; your standing in the community withers. And you just calmly keep making notes or rehearsing or believing—whatever it is you do to maintain a belief in yourself and your work. And very few people have this, and I think that everyone who has had a long career—full of all this insanity and uncertainty—has this gift. It can be developed, but no one teaches it to you or tells you where to go buy it or study it. You have to dig it out of yourself.

The ‘I am’ surfing phenomena over many incarnations eventually gets this. Old soul.

I forgot to tmblr this. And I don’t think I’m any more of a goddess than the next person. just a metaphor y’all for self-defining rather than being typecast in your own life. Enjoy.

thechrisgethardshow:

This week on TCGS, we’re inviting some of our past musical guests to join with the LLC, our fans brandishing instruments, and people on phones to link up and improvise one song that lasts for the entire hour of our show. It’s going to be a stupid clusterfuck of the highest caliber, but we’re hoping that in usual TCGS fashion it somehow manages to transcend idiocy and turn into something fun, funny, hopeful, and smart. Fingers crossed, but not too hard.

Video by the incomparable Danny Behar.

Gotta be great!

Love this! One of the true perks of being older is this cheap doesn’t happen to me anymore but how can I forget 20+ years of “compliments.”

Youtube user Brusspup (previously here and here) who often explores the intersection between art and science just released this new video featuring the Chladni plate experiment. First a black metal plate is attached to a tone generator and then sand is poured on the plate. As the speaker is cycled through various frequencies the sand naturally gravitates to the area where the least amount of vibration occurs causing fascinating geometric patterns to emerge. There’s actually a mathematical law that determines how each shape will form, the higher the frequency the more complex the pattern.
